Mei plasticvrij

or literally translated “May, plastic free” month!

“Mei plasticvrij” is a Belgian awareness-raising campaign about the impact of our plastic consumption on the environment. Their goal is simple and straightforward: we all need to reduce our use of single use plastic during at least the month of May and hopefully longer! And we couldn’t agree more!

Last year my husband and I took a trip to the Algarve, Portugal and discovered beautiful beaches and little hidden bays. But this was also the first time I noticed the plastic soup and waste on the beaches. There were plastic cups, bottles, ropes, fishing nets,… everywhere. I was astonished by so much waste on such a beautiful place.

Back home I started reading and learned that every minute 1 million plastic bottles are bought worldwide. That’s nearly 20.000 bottles every second! The single use products we use everyday are anything but disposable. It can take over 400 years to biodegrade. You can do the math, right.

So when Home Tales Interior was born, it was obvious to me that we would never use plastic. No non-degradable plastic products, no plastic packaging. It’s as simple as that.

Also at home I try to avoid plastic. But it is easier said then done and I still have a long way to go. And how about you? Are you trying to use less plastic around the house?

Here are a few tips to cut back on the plastic!

  • Carry a reusable water bottle and drink tap water!
  • Stop using plastic straws and cutlery
  • Bring your own (non plastic) shopping bag to your local supermarket
  • Store your food without plastic
  • Broken? Fix it!
